Dear Resisters,
Authoritarian regimes, like ours, thrive on fear and dehumanization. They want us to be numb and accept violence as inevitable. This week, they failed.
The killing of Renee Nicole Good by an ICE agent in Minneapolis has sparked a wave of grief and outrage across the country. Vigils and protests from Seattle to Boston have condemned the shooting as state-sanctioned violence and demanded accountability. The grief is painful, but it’s also what keeps us human. It’s a sign that what is happening is not normal, not okay, and will never be acceptable in a democratic society. Public grief binds communities, fuels solidarity, and rejects the normalization of violence. It’s a rejection of the administration’s false narrative and the gaslighting. In short, grief is a very human act of resistance.

This week, Trump also escalated his imperial ambitions abroad. His unilateral strike on Venezuela and the capture of President Nicolás Maduro triggered nationwide protests condemning the action as unconstitutional, a violation of international law, and thinly veiled neo-colonial profiteering. This matters because authoritarianism doesn’t stop at borders. It feeds on endless war, secrecy, and the erosion of democratic checks. When we demand congressional oversight and reject illegal wars, we defend our own democracy as well as Venezuelan sovereignty.
In a rare move, dozens of Republicans broke ranks this week, voting to restrict Trump’s war powers and override his vetoes, signalling that Trump is losing his iron grip on republican lawmakers. Blue states sued over $10 billion in welfare cuts, and public health advocates have filed suit over asbestos risks in the East Wing demolition. In New York, George Conway, a former Republican and co-founder of the Lincoln Project, announced a congressional bid as a Democrat to “take the fight directly back to Trump.”

Minneapolis Protesters Grieve, Demand ICE Withdrawal After Fatal Shooting
Hundreds gathered in Minneapolis to protest the killing of Renee Nicole Macklin Good by an ICE agent during Trump’s immigration crackdown, calling the act unjustified and demanding ICE leave Minnesota. Demonstrators chanted “No More ICE” and “Justice Now” outside a federal building, while a vigil honored Good and urged resistance. Officials disputed Homeland Security’s claim of self-defense, with Mayor Jacob Frey calling it “garbage” and Governor Tim Walz condemning the shooting as part of a dangerous escalation.1
Portland and Eugene Protest ICE Killing of Renee Good
Hundreds gathered in Portland and Eugene to condemn the killing of Renee Nicole Good by an ICE agent in Minneapolis, calling it a “preventable tragedy” and demanding the closure of local ICE facilities. Vigils featured candles, signs reading “Justice for Renee” and speeches denouncing Trump’s immigration crackdown as violent and unconstitutional. Oregon officials, including Mayor Keith Wilson and U.S. lawmakers, accused the administration of lying about the shooting and called for prosecutions.2

Speakers linked the violence to historical patterns of authoritarianism and urged communities to stand up for immigrants and civil rights.3
DC Protesters Shut Down Streets After ICE Killing
Hundreds marched in Washington, D.C., shutting down 14th and U Streets before rallying outside the White House to protest the killing of Renee Nicole Good by an ICE agent in Minneapolis. Demonstrators carried signs reading “Justice for Renee Good” and “ICE out of D.C.,” demanding accountability and an end to immigration crackdowns. Organized by the Party for Socialism and Liberation, the rally condemned Trump’s immigration crackdown and accused officials of lying about the shooting. Protesters called Good “an innocent bystander” and demanded accountability, chanting “ICE out of Texas.” The event was the first of four planned demonstrations in the Austin area.10

Nationwide Protests Challenge Trump’s Venezuela Intervention
Hundreds of people rallied in cities across the U.S.—including Chicago, New York, San Francisco, and Seattle—to oppose Trump’s unilateral military strike in Venezuela and the capture of President Nicolás Maduro. Protesters condemned the action as unconstitutional and a violation of international law, demanding congressional oversight and an end to U.S. imperialism. Organized by groups like Answer (Act Now Stop War End Racism) and Code Pink, demonstrators carried signs reading “No Blood for Oil” and “Stop Bombing Venezuela Now,” while some called for Maduro’s release.
Philadelphia Protesters Condemn U.S. Strikes and Maduro’s Capture
More than 100 protesters marched from Philadelphia City Hall to a U.S. Armed Forces recruitment center to denounce Trump’s military strikes in Venezuela and the capture of President Nicolás Maduro. Organizers called the intervention unconstitutional and a “war crime,” demanding Congress reclaim its authority over war decisions. Demonstrators held signs opposing U.S. imperialism and voiced solidarity with Venezuelan sovereignty, framing the action as part of a broader anti-war movement. Activists vowed to keep protesting and urged impeachment proceedings against Trump for escalating conflict and prioritizing oil interests over domestic needs.12
San Francisco Protesters Denounce Trump’s Bombing of Venezuela
About 400 protesters marched through downtown San Francisco to condemn Trump’s bombing of Caracas and the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. Demonstrators chanted “No more coups! No more wars! Latin America isn’t yours!” and carried signs demanding Congress reclaim its war powers. Speakers criticized U.S. imperialism and Trump’s remarks about controlling Venezuelan oil, framing the intervention as illegal and neo-colonial.13
Times Square Protesters Condemn Trump’s Venezuela Strike
Hundreds gathered in Times Square and marched to Trump Tower to denounce Trump’s military strike on Venezuela and the capture of President Nicolás Maduro, calling the operation a war crime and a threat to global stability. Protesters carried signs like “No Blood for Oil” and “Stop Bombing Venezuela Now,” accusing Trump of imperialism and oil profiteering. Speakers demanded Trump’s removal from office and criticized the administration for bypassing international law and Congress.14
Washington State Protesters Demand End to Trump’s Venezuela Intervention
Dozens rallied outside the U.S. District Courthouse in Tacoma to denounce Trump’s military strike on Venezuela and the capture of Nicolás Maduro, calling the action unconstitutional and driven by oil profits. Protesters urged Washington lawmakers to oppose further escalation and provide sanctuary protections for refugees. Organizers from migrant and social justice groups framed the intervention as part of a long history of U.S. imperialism, while speakers demanded elected officials take bold action, even civil disobedience, to stop Trump’s agenda.15

New Mexicans Protest Trump on Jan. 6 Anniversary
Over 150 people gathered in downtown Albuquerque to protest Trump on the fifth anniversary of the Capitol attack, condemning his continued praise of the event and pardons for participants. Demonstrators called Jan. 6 an insurrection and criticized Trump’s disregard for the Constitution, linking his actions to recent military intervention in Venezuela. Protesters demanded accountability, noting that charges against Trump for his role in the attack were dropped after his reelection. The rally featured music, signs, and calls for stronger democratic protections, reflecting ongoing grassroots resistance to authoritarianism.16
Republicans Break Ranks, Vote Against Trump
In a rare show of defiance, dozens of Republicans joined Democrats in opposing President Trump on several major votes. The Senate advanced a bipartisan resolution to restrict Trump from taking further military action in Venezuela without congressional approval, with five Republicans siding against the administration. In the House, two dozen Republicans voted to override Trump’s vetoes on bills supporting a Colorado water project and tribal land rights in Florida, while 17 backed an extension of Affordable Care Act subsidies.17
George Conway Launches Congressional Bid to Challenge Trump
George Conway, a former Republican and prominent Trump critic, announced he is running for Congress as a Democrat in New York’s 12th district. Conway, who co-founded the Lincoln Project and was once considered for a top legal post in Trump’s administration, said his campaign aims to fight corruption and safeguard democracy from autocracy. In his announcement, Conway vowed to “take the fight directly back to Trump,” framing his candidacy as a continuation of his years-long opposition to the president.18
Blue States Sue Trump Over $10B Welfare Cuts
California and four other Democratic-led states—New York, Colorado, Minnesota, and Illinois—are suing the Trump administration over its decision to freeze $10 billion in welfare funding, including TANF and child care programs. The administration claims, without evidence, that the states engaged in widespread fraud. California Attorney General Rob Bonta called the move unlawful and politically motivated, noting that Congress had already allocated the funds.19
Advocates Sue Trump Administration Over East Wing Asbestos Risks
Public health advocates have filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, demanding transparency on whether the rapid demolition of the White House East Wing exposed workers or the public to asbestos. The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization says its FOIA requests have gone unanswered and alleges the administration failed to disclose legally required safety measures. The demolition, part of Trump’s plan for a $400 million ballroom, proceeded without the usual public notifications, raising alarm among lawmakers and watchdogs.20
International Resistance to U.S. Imperialism
Colombians Protest Trump’s Threats of Military Action
Thousands marched across Colombia after Trump suggested expanding his military campaign beyond Venezuela into Colombian territory. President Gustavo Petro called for the rallies, condemning the U.S. strike on Caracas and Maduro’s capture as illegal and imperialistic. Protesters chanted “Out with the Yanks!” and carried signs asserting Latin America’s sovereignty, while similar demonstrations erupted in Mexico City, São Paulo, and Buenos Aires. Critics warned Trump’s actions aim to seize oil reserves and destabilize the region, not promote democracy.
