Welcome to How to Resist, a blueprint for resistance based on nonviolence, mutual aid, and community building for ordinary people who want to save democracy.
Read and write. Journal. Listen. Repost. Share. Help other discover and access information and news.
As a writer, I'm writing -- on my Reading.Writing.Revolution Substack, I'm writing some general essays about topics that are coming up, but also writing Letters to the Editor and other letters that people can read, copy and share -- send to your Senator or Congressperson, your mayor, governor or Attorney General. https://readingwritingrevolution.substack.com/
On top of that, I have three other more fictional approaches:
"Gulliver's Travels: The Broligarchy" is a dystopian scifi serial novel about a woman who accidentally arrives in a future technofascist America. Think Parable of the Sower, but systemic violence. Or The Handmaid's Tale but more modern focused on a technological and AI-driven society.
I also write "Letters from the Republic," like Civil War letters from a son to his mother about how the war is going, only this war is the one happening right now in Minnesota and beyond. It's very folksy. https://readingwritingrevolution.substack.com/s/letters
And finally, drawing on Orwell's "1984", every two weeks or so I write a rant entitled "Two Minutes of Hate." If you've read 1984, you'll recognize it. But it's perspective is the Resistance, as opposed to Orwell's two minutes coming from Big Brother. Same concept turned on it's head. Today's post is the latest Two Minutes of Hate, and the topic is the Epstein Files.
Anyway, that's what I'm doing. Giving people words to read, to borrow, to say. Helping to frame what's happening to make it more accessible and understandable. https://readingwritingrevolution.substack.com/
Please insist on using cash over card whenever possible as well. Every time you use a card more money goes to the bank and less to members in your community. Buy secondhand from individuals over big businesses when possible. Buy less generally. Give away your unwanted items on free groups.
The Irish under British rule called it Irish Democracy- the persistent, dogged choice by millions to simply ignore laws they saw as illegitimate. Tens of millions of people simply claiming exempt on their W-4s and βforgettingβ to pay- the IRS lacks the manpower and resources to get them all, to force compliance.
Make EVERY act of authoritarian control require physical enforcement which is impossibly difficult and costly to keep up. Fuck it
If you're a queer or Trans person, existence is resistance. Be loud and be proud. Speak your truth. If you feel unsafe to do this alone, bring as many friends and allies as possible to support you.
Number 10 is particularly interesting, considering that the political sphere you support censors academic freedom by perpetuating a curriculum of anti-scientific thinking and establishing a status quo of political correctness that blocks freedom of speech and systematically obstructs the exchange of ideas.
Thank you for writing and sharing this! I hope you don't mind but I'd like to link to this article in one of my upcoming publications on pre-revolutionary trends (https://chelseakers.substack.com/).
I have been moving away the tech giants for a while. Here are my suggestions. Its really important to divest from these companies too.
